Nigeria can only be great if we change our mindset and begin to see and do things differently. There is no better time than now.

The Time is Now for Nigerians

As we expect a better Nigeria, let us meditate on these words today and always. How much of a strong desire have we had as citizens to build a country that our children’s children will be proud to live in and call home? These are questions that all Nigerians should ask themselves on the

daily. What do we do as Nigerians? We struggle everyday in our different endeavours, we struggle to make ends meet, we struggle to make a better living, we struggle to do more than our parents before us, we struggle to achieve success that will make our family proud.

However, in all of this have we really stopped to think about the bigger picture? That big picture that includes but is not limited to a struggle to liberate our country, Nigeria. A struggle to overcome the failure that has become a consistent, reoccurring trademark in our national life. A struggle to put behind us for good failed leadership and backwardness when it comes to nation building and forward thinking. A struggle to unite our country. All of these should be foremost on our minds and be made a priority in our thinking because at the end of the day no matter how hard you try to build a castle for yourself, you will definitely from time to time be made to face the rot just outside your castle, you will see the poverty just by looking out the windows of your castle, you will be confronted with the decay in the system and the corrupt practices of our leaders every other day.

We as a people must understand that as a nation we cannot overlook and neglect the fact that the failure of our country is a reflection of us as a people, we cannot choose to remain blind to the fact that the failure of our country is something we would blame ourselves for in years to come. That is why we do not need to look the other way or act like the fight is not ours, we must own this fight and fight it. We must stand for something, we must stand for a Nigeria that is ready to disassociate herself from all the old ideologies that have proven ineffective, we must stand for a Nigeria that material success is not the ultimate, we must stand for a Nigeria that patriotism is the new order.

We should encourage clarity and transparency of in all our dealings. In Nigeria today there is no sincerity of purpose, no sincerity in our human rights activism, no genuine desire to serve humanity. The bankers are looking to cut corners and even health workers are not left out either. The civil servants are demanding and expecting bribes in other to pass a file from one table to the next and the list goes on and on. Which sector can we in all honesty point a finger at to say they are different because in Nigeria today we have made material possessions and acquisitions our yardstick to measure success whereas that is not how it should be at all. We strive and cut corners to buy a car, build a house and generally measure up to some undefined standard that exist basically only in our own heads thereby exerting undue pressure.

How to see Nigerian New Democracy

Look around you, there is abject poverty: there are bad roads, unemployment, a gross lack of basic amenities, illiteracy abounds, bigotry is palpable, insecurity at an all time high and last but not the least failed leadership. How much longer are we going to continue to deceive ourselves living in a fool’s paradise. It is time we realised there is no better time than now for a paradigm shift, there is no better time to shift our focus from failure to success, there is no better time to shift from unpatriotism to patriotism, there is no better time to shift from not holding the government of the day accountable to demanding accountability on all fronts, there is no better time than now to shift from irresponsible leadership to responsible leadership, there is no better time to shift from that mind set that measures success through material acquisitions to making a real difference in the lives of one or more people.
