THE HERDSMEN ATTACKS AND THE DAPCHI INCIDENT: NATION IN THE THROES OF PROFOUND SECURITY CRISIS.

kenneth Obi

Nigeria is indeed a nation in the throes of profound security crisis: from bomb attacks by the allegedly defeated Boko Haram on IDP camps to Fulani herdsmen crisis in Benue. The latest being the abduction and release of the Dapchi schoolgirls.

The herdsmen attacks has become Nigeria's nightmare. Fulani herdsmen killed hundreds of Benue people, presidency kept quite. After pressure from all angle and cries from Nigerians and international pressure: presidency drafted the police to Benue. Benue people kill 7 Fulani herdsmen; immediately presidency drafted Nigerian Army to storm Benue while ordering militants and vigilante groups to be disarmed with immediate effect. Meanwhile, there's no single effort to disarm Fulani herdsmen which the Federal Government said are from Chad, Mali and Niger.

Then the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks and kidnapping after the Federal Government claimed to have defeated the Islamic sect is worrisome. The recent kidnap and release of Dapchi schoolgirls by Boko Haram insurgents puts a big question mark to the claim of the Federal Government?

I have read different views and analysis on the Dapchi schoolgirls kinap including the ones alleging Federal Government's complicity in the whole drama: the FG promised that the girls are coming back, they came. Boko haram took good care of the girls and brought them back with kits that they didn't go there with.

Boko haram subdued the Nigerian soldiers to the extent of not having any opposition or confrontation on their way to Dapchi and having all the time in the world to teach and instruct parents of the returnee girls on good ethics of child upbringing. Boko haram returned to the territory whence they had come, unmolested. Ridiculous, isn't it?

Be that as it may, truth is that Nigerians are not secured. From bomb attacks by the allegedly defeated Boko Haram on IDP camps to Fulani herdsmen crisis in Benue. The latest being the abduction and release of the Dapchi schoolgirls, except for five who died on the way to Dapchi and Leah Sharibu. Leah Sharibu was the sole christian among the group, and this is believed to be the reason she was held back. Across Nigeria people are praying for the return of Leah Sharibu.

I want to use this medium to appeal to the Federal Government to strengthen security in Nigeria and to do everything necessary to secure the release of Leah Sharibu.
